This dataset presents summary information related to world coal consumption. It is part of a supporting dataset for the book World On the Edge: How to Prevent Environmental and Economic Collapse by Lester R. Brown, available from the [Earth Policy Institute](http://www.earth-policy.org/ "Earth Policy website"). This dataset includes the following coal consumption data: top ten countries (1980 - 2000); U.S. (1950 - 2010); China (1965 - 2009); E.U. (1980 - 2009); and subsidies in selected countries (2009).
