TEAMER: Structural Tidal Turbine Blade Test to Failure
This TEAMER-funded project advanced the state of the art in validating that a blade design could withstand predicted extreme loading for current energy converters. Utilizing the turbine blade testing expertise at NLR, the campaign conducted a controlled static test to failure of the Verdant Power Gen5d epoxy turbine blade. This blade design had performed successfully at RITE and had previously been tested by NLR under static and fatigue loading. The results validated that the blade design could withstand model-predicted extreme loads and confirmed that the blade design and manufacturing process incorporated a sufficient safety factor to support a 20-year lifetime. Lessons learned from the campaign enabled cost reductions in the design and manufacturing of future turbine blades by helping avoid unnecessary over-design.
This submission contains the post-access report, raw data files for all instrumentation for the final tests to blade failure, MATLAB functions and datasets for processing CreaForm point tracking data, and all datasets used to produce figures for the post-access report.
This project is part of the TEAMER RFTS 11 (request for technical support) program.
