TEAMER: Open-Source Hydrofoil Added-Mass and Damping Coefficients for MHK Turbine Reference Models

Publicly accessible License

This project aims to create an open-source collection of added-mass and damping coefficients for hydrofoils that represent Reference Model marine hydrokinetic (MHK) turbine blades. This dataset includes experimental hydrofoil measurements from static and forced-oscillation tests, provided as time-series text files containing measured forces and hydrofoil positions (surge, heave, and pitch) under varying test conditions. Supporting files include an experimental test matrix, moment-of-inertia calculations, and MATLAB scripts for processing the measurements to estimate added-mass and damping terms. The dataset aims to facilitate the verification and validation of the enhanced OpenFAST numerical code, developed by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) as part of the DOE ARPA-E SHARKS program. The dataset improves prediction accuracy for hydrodynamic load estimate and turbine performance modeling in both fixed and floating MHK systems by incorporating essential physical variables such as increased mass, buoyancy, and inertia.

Experiments were conducted at the Ocean Resources and Renewable Energy (ORRE) Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which hosts a recirculating wave-current flume measuring 11.5 m in length, 1.2 m in width, and 1.3 m in height, with an operational depth of 1.0 m. The experimental specimen was a NACA 631-424 hydrofoil of 0.2 m chord and 0.8 m span. The facility features a multi degree-of-freedom gantry system that can apply controlled oscillations to scaled hydrofoil models across various wave, current, and combined flow conditions. Force and flow data were acquired with a six-component Kistler load cell and a 3D current meter, facilitating high-resolution recording of forces, moments, and flow dynamics.
The experimental campaign included two main test sets: (1) static foil settings at different flow velocities, and (2) forced oscillations in currents at various speeds. Hydrofoils underwent surge, heave, pitch, and combination motions across a spectrum of amplitudes and frequencies.
